Keivin Burns High School Science Teacher Award
Call for Nominations
The Spectroscopy Society of Pittsburgh (SSP) is pleased to announce the continuation of the Keivin Burns Outstanding High School Science Teacher Award program for 2009. The award is named after Keivin Burns, an outstanding astronomer, spectroscopist, and teacher at the Allegheny Observatory and the University of Pittsburgh. The purpose of the award is to recognize excellence in teaching of science at the secondary school level. The awardee(s) will be presented with a plaque and a $1,250 honorarium at the SSP Awards Banquet in May 2009.
A committee of SSP members, consisting of scientists from industry and academia, will select the winner from a group of qualified nominees. If your school has a teacher who has demonstrated exemplary standards and teaching practices, please have him/her complete the enclosed form and send it, along with a letter of recommendation from the head of the science department or secondary school principal, to me by January 15, 2009. Please urge your nominee to be certain that both documents are submitted on time as they are the sole basis for selection. Please limit the nominee's responses to the space provided on the enclosed application with no more than an additional one-page addendum.
Nominations will remain active for three years. Only one teacher per school may be nominated each year. Selection for the Keivin Burns Outstanding High School Science Teacher Award is a one-time honor; former recipients are not eligible for the 2009 award. A list of past award winners is included in this mailing.
